Embarking on a career path is a pivotal journey for every student, and as a guidance counsellor at Bereton Montessori School in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, who handle all areas of counselling including psychological, personal, social, vocational and career counselling, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative impact our institution has on shaping future leaders. As a counsellor, I work closely with each student to understand their strengths, interests, and aspirations, guiding them towards career paths that align with their individual goals. Whether it’s exploring potential career options, preparing for college admissions, or honing essential employability skills, we work hand in hand with the parents to ensure that every student receives tailored guidance to their unique needs.
One of the hallmarks of Bereton School’s career guidance initiative is our emphasis on experiential learning and real-world exposure. Through career talks for our year students guiding them through their preferred career path and subject selection process into Year 10. Through internships, job shadowing opportunities, and industry partnerships, students gain invaluable insights into various professions, allowing them to make informed decisions about their future career paths at the Year 10 level, By bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application, we empower students to become proactive architects of their own careers by organising a career pathway program tagged BEYOND BERETON. This is our career fair where we host different Universities around the world, giving them the opportunity to meet our parents and give us the best university advice.
Furthermore, Bereton Montessori School fosters a Leadership program known as DUKE OF EDINBURGH FOUNDATION.UK. Upon completion, participants get certificates that help them to gain admissions into ivy league schools locally and internationally.
The program also prepares students for future endeavours where they would be expected to make decisions on their own. It equips them with problem solving skills, life coping skills, communication skills and other related skills universities expect applicants to possess outside of academic qualifications.
It runs for 6 months and segmented into four areas,
- Skills acquisition
- Physical recreation
- Voluntary Service
- Adventurous Journey
Coaches are invited to take the students through the various stages. It ends with the last bit which takes participants to Adventurous Journey for the final preparations by the National officers of Duke of Edinburgh, Nigeria. It is a rich program. The most exciting part is that I am the coordinator of DUKE OF EDINBURGH BERETON And I have amazing award leaders working with me to make the students experience a huge success.
